Superman 1978 review

Time for my first movie review it's a movie which i have loved for a very long time it came out in 1978 the year I was born yes i am that old thank you for thinking that.  I will say there are going to be SPOILERS ahead but if you have not seen it where have you been ever Christmas I mean come on everyone has seen this movie at least once anyway just for you SPOILERS.

SPOILERS AHEAD BUT SERIOUSLY WATCH FIRST BEFORE MOVING ON...

Superman the movie is every thing a movie should be it's got a great story great actors and the best tag line ever "You'll Believe a Man can Fly".  Superman Directed by Richard Donner Story by Mario Puzo and stars Christopher Reeve, as Kal-El/Clark Kent/Superman Margot Kidder as Lois Lane, Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor, Jackie Cooper as Perry White, Marlon Brando as Jor-El, Glenn Ford as Jonathan Kent, Terence Stamp as General Zod and Phyllis Thaxter as Martha Kent all of these actors are great and have a wealth of experieance and placing a young unknown actor (Christopher Reeeve) among them makes this movie shine. "In the decade of the 1930s, even the great city of Metropolis was not spared the ravages of the worldwide depression. In times of fear and confusion, the job of informing the public was the responsibility of the Daily Planet, a great metropolitan newspaper whose reputation for clarity and truth had become the symbol for hope in the city of Metropolis..."   This is the opening line's of the movie read by a young boy reading a comic which slowly becomes the real world while the boy is speaking the start of the Superman theme is heard when the boy finishes his line the drums start and we are into the full Superman theme music which even today almost 32 years after it was written is still a great piece of music.  When the credits finish we are onto the planet krypton where we are introduced to Jor-El, General Zod , Ursa and Non before they are sent into the phantom zone for crimes against Krypton it is here that we also learn of Kryptons  faith and Jor_El's plan for his son after being ordered not to leave Krypton and so Krypton begins to explode and so Baby Kal-El is sent to earth.  At this point in the movie we have been to an alien world and saw them die because of there own shortsightedness and a lone survivor a child is sent to earth to help us.

The ship crash lands and as Jonathan and Martha Kent pass by causing them to get a flat anyway they find the baby bring him back to the car Jonathan is fixing the flat Martha warns him about his heart they have a discussion Martha looks out towards the feild Jonathan says MArtha Clark Kent are you listening to me just then the car fall Kal-El catches it and in the Scence we've gotten his name Clark and we know that there going to keep him.

We jump ahead to Clark the teenage years we see him in school being the butt of everyone's joke which really gets to clark as he could be and do things they can't imagine but he has to hold back form showing off to much.  He then starts to run and we see how happy he is at being able to use his powers he even shows off when he gets to his parents house before his school friends when they question him he says he ran to which he is called a freak his dad confronts him about it Clark admits that yeah he was showing off but thats what he wants to do he is told by Jonathan " And one thing I do know son, and thats you are here for a *reason*.  I don't know whose reason, or whatever the reason is... Maybe it's because...uh...I don't. But I do know it's not to score toucjdowns. Huh?" Clark then races ahead and Jonathon die's of a heart attack.  We see the Kents at the funeral time moves on again clark discovers the green crystal in his barn tells his mother he has to go she understands he goes north comes to an ice feild and throws the crystal in to it and so the Fortress of Solitude is born young Clark heads in looks around moves some crystals about Jor-El speaks to him and teaches him everything he needs to know by the end Superman is born.  Interesting fact the actor who played young Clark Kent had all his lines redone by Christopher Reeve and where dubbed in during editing.

Enter Metropolis  now i could spend forever here talking about it but i won't in Metropolis we are introduced to Otis, Lex Luthor,  Ms Teschmacher,  Jimmy Olsen,  Perry White,  Lois Lane and a some what more repressed Clark Kent.  Superman first night saving people is great my favorite ones are he saves  Air Force one, Gets the Cat out of the Tree, Captures a jewel thief and brings him to an Officer Mooney ( I like this cause my surname is Mooney it makes me laugh ) and saves Lois from hitting the ground to which we get another great line "Superman: Easy, miss. I've got you.  Lois: You - you've got me? Who's got you?"We then move on to Superman being the story of the century to which Lois gets a note from A-Friend wink wink it's Superman anyway he show's up to do an interview with Lois they talk she questions him about his powers she stands behind a planter there talking about X-ray vision she asks what colour underwear is she wearing Superman is stump as he can't see them throw the planter it being made of lead she mistakes his hmm for being embarrassed Superman explains whats wrong she moves away from the planter Superman says Pink Lois says what your underwear is pink she darts back to the planter Superman response sorry I seem to have embarrassed you ( Even Superman gets revenge) Anyway She says do you like pink he does they do a whole flying scene and then shes in love with him. Right lets move on Lex is reading about Superman and comes to the conclusion that Kryptonite will kill Superman Lex after is a miss guided genius/Madman.  He lures Superman to his base with a false threat tells him his real plan and then slips kryptonite on him.  Superman is saved by Ms Teschmacher but he has to save her parents from the missile about to hit her home town instead of the one about to hit the San Andreas fault line.  The missile hits big Earthquake Superman flies everywhere saving people repairs the fault line but not before Lois Dies when he releases whats happened he flies to her pulls her out of the car he can't save her.  Everything is quiet no music no birds nothing just Superman saying no under his breath then Boom a mighty scream which no matter how many times i watch still makes the hairs in the back of my neck stand up. This scene really shows us how powerful Superman really is.  We then see him take off flying towards space were we her the voices of both his fathers Jor-El telling him he must not interfere with human lives and Jonathan's last words you are here for a reason with more determination he enters orbit spins the world backwards reversing time to before Lois dies and corrects to planet rotatation ( This is the only bit I have a problem with as it would have destroyed the planet) Lois is saved Lex is brought to prison and you have just seen one of the greatest movies made.
Superman 1978 5 out of 5
